Ask the Expert

Question:

a photo of Phil and Lynn reading a letter What do I need to do to get my car ready for winter? Do you have a set list of things to check and do?

Answer:

Great question! With winter almost upon us, there is no better time to "Be Car Care Aware" and make sure your vehicle is ready for severe conditions, according to the Car Care Council.

The Car Care Council recommends that the following tasks should be performed (and I agree):

1) Test the coolant (antifreeze) for condition and protection level.
2) Change oil (if due) and consider a synthetic oil for this change to help lubrication in low temperatures.
3) Test the battery condition and inspect the exhaust system for any leaks.
4) Be certain the heater and defroster are working properly.
5) Keep your gas tank at least half full. Not only does this help keep moisture out, but it also gives you a safety margin if you get stuck while on the road.
6) Inspect your tires for the proper pressure and tread depth. A properly inflated tire will have the best traction.
7) Check to see that all lights are working and the headlights are properly aimed.
8) Inspect your windshield wiper blades to make sure they work properly and that the washer bottle is full of a winter grade of fluid.
9) Dig that scraper/snow brush out of the trunk, from under the seat, or find it where you put it in the garage. Finding it, or buying a new one, now will be a lot easier on you than it will the first day you need one.
