The Role of the Library:
Libraries are like any other business; we grow based on demand, we change
with the times and we try to remain relevant to those we serve.
HPLD is all about connections; connecting you to information, inspiration
and entertainment. Much like the cell phone provider that depicts the network of people behind you connecting you with whomever, the staff behind the library
doors are available to connect you with your information needs.
That probably doesn't sound that impressive until you realize that HPLD employs
approximately 200 people. Suddenly your "information network" has just expanded, and if you take into account the print resources available at your library your "information network" has increased to several thousand. Add to that the
multitude of resources available through the libraries online databases, and
your public library now rivals even the largest cell phone network. Your "library network" takes their jobs seriously. When you have an information need, the library offers you choices. You can call, email, submit a web inquiry via
our website, and of course visit the library in person.
HPLD also strives to be a gathering place. And with the wonderful meeting spaces available in each library, equipped with the latest technology, gatherings are
certainly a role the library fills. The library is also a place for community
discourse where all opinions can be expressed, and yet the library offers so
much more.
Libraries help prepare children for school and life with early literacy
storytimes. They offer free internet access which you can connect to from
dozens of computers in the library or from your own wireless device. Not to
mention that you can check out a laptop at the library and take it home to use.
During these tough economic times the library is also taking on the role of
training and support by providing assistance and resources to people searching
for a job, writing a resume and applying for jobs via the internet. Yet all of
these resources and services are just a small portion of the HPLD's role in
the community.
The role of libraries across the country is certainly shifting and the HPLD's
role is no exception. We take our role in the community seriously and hope
that whatever your needs your "library network" can connect you with
information, inspiration and entertainment for life.
