Meet Our Instructors

Michelle Bean Michelle Bean

I love to learn more about those I see inside and outside of The Pulse, so I'm grateful for the opportunity to share a little of myself. I was born and raised here in the Front Range area but with a father in the military/government we found ourselves moving quite often...Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona. I quickly learned to make friends and just appreciate the moment. Once I entered junior high, we finally settled in the Loveland area and I was able to graduate from high school with friends that I'd had since junior high... a big deal for the girl who had moved just about every six months! While in school, my competitive nature found an outlet, and I tried every sport my school offered: soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming, track, cheerleading... You name it. I tried it. So, it's not too much of a surprise that I ended up in the fitness industry.

I always knew I wanted to go into the health field but my initial direction was to become a pediatrician. However, during my freshman year of college at CSU, three people I loved very much -- my grandmother, my grandfather, and my dad -- all died from conditions considered preventable. I decided to change my major to Exercise Sports Science where the focus is on prevention. A passion was born within me to help others invest in their own health. My goal is to make exercise fun, as well as a source of stress management, and to encourage or challenge Pulse members to go further or reach higher than they thought they could.

While the field I ended up in is unlikely to surprise anyone, the fact that I am a mother of four shocks me most of all. I was not one of those girls who always knew she wanted to be a mom. In fact, I remember telling others I didn't want to have kids at all. But then right after high school I met my husband Kenny. We agreed on two kids but somewhere along the way I learned that I love being a mom and Kenny is an awesome dad. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball that ends up being the best thing ever. We have three biological children and one adopted child -- Scott (18), Brody (12), McKhenna (6), and Sawyer (4) -- and now my family and my faith are the most important things in my life. Between the kids, teaching classes, and owning our own HVAC business, life can get a little crazy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Stop into class anytime to say "Hello" and join us for some fitness FUN!

How You Show Up: It's Your Choice

Creating RESULTS

Have you ever had one of these conversation with yourself?: "I'll start tomorrow," or "It's just too early to get up and exercise right now," or "I've already worked a full day. I'm just too tired to do any more."

What about this rationale?: "It's just one bite. It won't hurt me." or "The donut I ate yesterday didn't affect the scale at all, so I can have another one today."

Excuses are everywhere, and they keep us from taking responsibility for our actions. Excuses allow us to play small and to play less than, rather than playing with the excellence that we are truly capable of. They allow us to put forth minimal effort so we never really have to achieve or accomplish anything. Ultimately, excuses hold us back!

A good personal question to ask is "How do I want to present myself? Would I prefer to display the attributes of an adult or a child? Do I want to show up as lazy, incompetent, undependable, throwing a temper tantrum, showing up late, or not showing up at all? Or would I rather present myself as inspired, motivated, determined, joy-filled, excited, determined, explorative, adventurous, focused, positive and validated?

How we show up in life is a CHOICE. How we present ourselves on a daily basis or minute-by-minute basis is a CHOICE. It does not matter if it is a choice about eating, our conversations, our relationships, our job, etc. Being lazy or motivated is a CHOICE. Giving up on doing cardio or biting the bullet and giving it another five minutes is a CHOICE. Planning meals or eating take out is a CHOICE. Playing small or playing to win is a CHOICE. All it takes is a step in the direction you desire to BE. The rest will follow.

A great way to let go of and release attributes that no longer serve us well is to write them a Dear John letter and fire them! Get out a clean piece of paper. Address it to yourself. Now put it all down in writing. State all of the reasons you are firing the excuses that hold you back. Be specific and thorough. Ensure these excuses do not receive 'one last chance,' a 'get out of jail free' card and definitely not 'a final paycheck.' FIRE THEM! When your letter is complete, READ IT OUT LOUD. When you feel complete with this release, burn the letter.

Now, how would you like to show up? What are the ways you desire to present yourself? What are the attributes you would like to explore and solidify within your personality? Take out a clean sheet of paper and create a list of these attributes. Each day this week, pick ONE word to explore for that entire day. BE that word all day long. How does that word/attribute FEEL? How does it dress? How does it speak? How does it listen? How does it fuel/feed itself? How does it exercise? How does it communicate? How does it express itself? As an example, if your word for the day is Magnificent, how will you demonstrate your magnificence in your daily tasks, in your conversations and in your actions? What foods would demonstrate taking care of your health magnificently? How will you demonstrate your magnificence as you make your heart pump during a workout or cardio session? Can you recognize the magnificence in those around you? The more you put your focus on being magnificent, the more magnificent you will BE.

How we show up in life is a CHOICE. Always! What is your choice? Have you already started looking for a blank piece of paper to write your Dear John letter? Or have you empowered another excuse?

Hula Hooping:/Circular Motion: A Specialty Class for Hoopers of All Kinds:
Special Interest Classes Saturdays, March 1, 8, 15 and 22, 1-2 p.m. Contact Wendy Rosenberg for any questions, 970.218.1336.

You may have heard of Hula Hooping and think back to your younger days as a child, or you may even have tried it more recently and failed. So, here's some good news: Hooping vs. Hula Hooping: there is a difference. When you think of Hula Hooping, you think of the small plastic hula hoops found in toy stores. These are very difficult for an adult to use successfully. Hooping is easier because we use bigger and heavier hoops that slowly rotate around our bodies. This means that even if you think you can't hoop, with one of the specially-made adult hoops, YOU CAN! Everybody can hoop, regardless of age, size, or sense of rhythm. Hooping is an exciting and invigorating way to exercise, all while having fun and letting the inner child come out to play. Hooping is a wonderful cardiovascular workout. You can work up a great sweat. You will build power in your core, sculpt your thighs and arms, and shape an awesome butt! It's an overall workout without even feeling like you're working out! The hoop is just a guide or tool to "get centered' and open the body to creative expression through circular movement. Some claim that hooping has other energetic benefits as well. Hooping can release stress, relax your mind, reduce fatigue, release toxins, improve digestion and so much more. We will work together learning the step-by-step basic movements. As the class progresses, our moves will become a dance, flowing around the room with movements inside our hoops. Wear comfortable fitting clothes that are not too baggy. Hoops will be provided.

Upcoming Events

Welcome to the Spin Doctor Social Club

Most people who know Jon Kushner will tell you the same thing, "Jon has a passion for people, music and sharing his excitement of cycling."

Show up at Jon's house any weekend night and ask him to play some great classic blues, classic rock, jazz, or classical music from his huge collection of LP records as the two of you tune up your bicycle, or out on road for a training ride proves the above points.

About 8 years ago, Jon was nick named "The Spin Doctor" by a group of Pulse cycling members based on his love & knowledge of music. Three years ago, while playing a stack of classic LP records and music videos, again for a group of Pulse members at a holiday party in early December, the host said "Jon, you have to play this stuff during a Spinning Class at the club."

So the first "Spin Doctor Social Club" ride was born and the first concert scheduled for January of 2005. Now in the third year, the Spin Doctor Social Club concerts are scheduled for the 2007-2008 season. This year's series includes the following concerts:

Saturday March 8, 2008: An evening with The Beatles, from Liverpool, to their 1st two US performances on the Ed Sullivan Show, Shea Stadium and more.

Jon tells us the idea and format for his Spin Doctor Social Club are based on a classic series of R&B concerts headlined by Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters on December 17, 1960, sponsored by the Honeyette Social Club held at the Silvio Lounge on Chicago's West Side. The original concert posters for the Silvio Lounge concerts are the model for our Spin Doctor Social Club promotional concert posters you see at The New Pulse.

Each year Jon chooses four classic concerts that have great music and rhythm to cycle to. Jon says, "As long as you like the artist, show up for a great ride even if you just want to sit on the floor and listen!"

Our cycling studio is transformed into a concert hall with an 8' x 10 foot screen, video projector and great music!

The 2006/2007 concert series included the following performances:
Derek Trucks
The Allman Brothers
Carlos Santana - Supernatural
Susan Tedeschi

The 2006 concert series included the following performances:
The Band's Last Waltz
Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble
Steve Winwood & Traffic - The Last Traffic Jam
Carlos Santana - Live by Request

Reservations for each concert are available one (1) week prior to each ride on Saturday morning. Register at the front desk. Refreshments are served during each of the rides.

For more information please contact "The Spin Doctor" (Jon) at one of his cycling classes or at jk@tridentconsulting.org.

See you at the Show!

Health Tip
Information courtesy of Les Mills - http://www.lesmills.com

Blood glucose has to remain within a certain range in order for the body to function properly and to prevent damage caused by excessively high levels. When blood glucose levels drop or fall below normal, energy levels can also sink. High GI foods are often to blame for these fluctuations. 'Reactive hypoglycaemia,' where blood glucose falls to below the starting level, can occur 1.5 to two hours after eating a high GI meal. Some people are more sensitive to these rises and falls of blood glucose and those affected may often get cravings, particularly for carbohydrate-rich foods, and lack energy mid-morning or afternoon. Take the following steps to keep your blood glucose level changes more gentle:

*Include a low GI food at each meal

*Avoid large intakes of carbohydrate-rich foods in one hit - spread them out evenly across the day

*Try not to skip meals - this just leaves you eating more later and your body's insulin response will be greater

*Eat breakfast - this has been shown to improve concentration levels through the morning, partly due to improved blood glucose availability. You will also show a more gentle hormonal response to the lunchtime meal as well as not feeling the need to reach for the biscuit tin mid-morning (make all four bullets)
