Meet Our Instructors

Heather Van Deursen Heather Van Deursen

I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, a friendly city full of parks, fountains, and romance --that's the way I remember it, anyway -- not to mention some bone-chilling winters and hot, muggy summers. I was the third out of four kids in my family, and in college by age 16. I came to Colorado in 1980, immediately feeling right at home with the mountains and sunshine. Since then, Colorado has really been home for me, though at one point, I lived a few pleasant years in Chicago.

One thing most of my class members usually figure out right away is that I travel a lot! I have been really lucky to have the opportunity to see so many interesting places in the world. I love it all. Some of my less typical, but so memorable and interesting travel destinations have included Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Palau, The Galapagos Islands, and Bolivia.

I also enjoy golf, scuba diving, and I would love to get back onto the tennis court.

I live in the country, and love the peace and quiet of that lifestyle -- tending to a garden of tomatoes and peppers, and eating them right off the vine...what a treat. I have two little ones: Canines, NiƱa and Osita, Pomeranian/Chihuahua mixes, who are now going on 12 years old. They are so darling and full of energy. One of my favorite things is to play and cuddle with them. I also take them for walks while riding my bike. Sometimes they ride in the bicycle basket for a treat.

My extensive schooling in Qigong, Tai Chi, and Yoga were fantastic and rewarding experiences. I spent months at a time living in New York, and in the mountains of Colorado in an ashram, starting each day before daybreak and going into the night, day after day, studying, learning, living these fantastic and soothing, healing ways. These are months of my life that I will always cherish.

I am able to share some of these teachings through individual and private sessions mostly in and around Greeley. I also have had a real estate license since 1992.

Although I started my fitness teaching in Chicago with aerobics and body conditioning, you will find me at the Pulse mostly teaching Bodyflow, where I am able to share some wonderful time with many great people and some incredibly devoted Bodyflow fans. Thank you - what a wonderful thing to share!

I'd love to see you in class sometime!

Feeding Your NATURAL KILLER Cells

Creating RESULTS

One of the greatest ways to combat cancer is at the source. Prevent the disease from ever setting up house and forming roots in the body. We can do this by fueling the body with foods that feed the Natural Killer cells, or T-cells, which attack and destroy cancerous ones.

Cancer cells thrive on refined sugar. When fed sugar, cancer cells become little monsters, growing, expanding, and devouring healthy cells within the body -- not to mention the other side effects of sugar in the body -- depression, mood swings, increased fatigue, headaches, and fat gain.

On the flip side, Dark Green Leafy and Cruciferous vegetables contain the Phyto-nutrients needed to heal your body at a cellular level. Each raw vegetable contains 10,000 known vitamins, minerals, enzymes and Phyto-nutrients. By eating fresh raw or slightly steamed vegetables on a daily basis you provide thousands of anti-oxidants and Phyto-nutrients, the "good guys," to your Natural Killer cells allowing them to fight the "bad guys."

Cancer-fighting Cruciferous Veggies includes: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard greens, kale, Brussels sprouts and bok choy. The Dark Green Leafy family includes Swiss chard, chicory, collard greens, arugula, dandelion greens, green kale, purple/red kale, lacinato kale, mustard greens and spinach.
  • Create a daily log of everything you eat.
  • Circle each food item containing SUGAR.
  • Star ** each serving of fresh raw Vegetables or Fruit you consumed.
  • Count up all of the Sugar, Vegetable and Fruit items.
  • Select ONE cancer-feeding sugar item you will trade for eating Two cancer-fighting, anti-oxidant-rich vegetables.
  • Celebrate your new choice; repeat steps next week!
Before long you will be eating 7-11 servings of foods loaded with anti-oxidants and Phyto-nutrients on a daily basis. Choose the nutrients needed for your Natural Killer cells to attack and destroy cancer at its source. If you would like information on how to get 9-13 servings of Fruits and Veggies in your system each day, please contact Nadine about Juice Plus.

Health Tip

HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO DRINK? This is different for everyone and relates to how much fluid you are losing. Anything which increases the water loss from your body increases your need to re-hydrate. This includes situations that make you sweat more such as exercise; hot weather; saunas/hot tubs and sickness with a fever or vomiting and/or diarrhea. The recommendation is usually to aim for eight glasses a day. This is very general, however, and the best guide is to use the urine check as above. If you are a heavy sweater during exercise try weighing yourself before and after your workout - any loss is entirely from water loss and you need to drink 1.5 liters for every kg of weight lost. If you lose more than one kg you are not drinking nearly enough during the workout and this will be affecting your ability to exercise effectively.

WHAT SHOULD I DRINK? Without doubt water is the best option. Water contains no kilojoules and unless you are exercising for more than 90 minutes there is no need for anything else. Furthermore since many of us reach for food when we are in fact thirsty, drinking water regularly throughout the day can help you to eat less and assist in weight control. Remember that water is also in many foods such as fruits, vegetables and soups so these also contribute to your total intake.
